Wow. Look at Flux Factory. It’s hard to believe this vibrant hub of creativity started in a derelict spice factory. Can you picture it? Seven artists in 1994. No walls no water no heat. Just a shared dream.

Flux Factory isn’t just a building. It’s a legacy of resilience. It’s a testament to artists’ determination. They created an alternative to the commercial gallery scene. They built a community. Their humble beginnings in Williamsburg quickly grew into a notorious arts destination. They moved to Sunnyside Queens in 2002. Eminent domain forced another move in 2009. That’s when they settled into this impressive 9000 square foot space in Long Island City.

This wasn’t just another relocation. The move spurred Flux Factory to formalize its residency program. Now it serves 40 artists annually. Imagine the energy the creativity the collaboration. It’s not just studios and workshops. It’s a print shop a wood shop a technical office. And a gallery a 1400 square foot space where residents showcase their work.

Think about that. Over 300 artists-in-residence. Over 700 exhibitions. 75 multidisciplinary events every year. All free to the public. The artists are compensated. That’s Flux Factory’s commitment to fostering artistic growth while maintaining accessibility for everyone.

Flux Factory’s impact extends beyond its walls. They co-founded the Windmill Community Garden. They launched the Rhizome Project an antiracist initiative. They even started a community fridge distributing free food and essentials.

Their commitment to community goes global too. Flux Factory sends artists abroad through its Satellite Projects program. In 2021 alone 40 artists traveled to Denmark and Hungary. They also piloted a residency on Governors Island. This provided 25 artists with free studio space.

Flux Factory’s journey is extraordinary. From a dilapidated spice factory to this thriving complex. They’ve achieved permanent sustainability. They bought their building. They even launched a new venue Flux IV on the Hunters Point South waterfront. It’s a beautiful example of how art can transform a space a community and even the world. Their story inspires us all. So take a moment. Appreciate this place. This is Flux Factory. A beacon of art and community.
