Hidden within Freiburg im Breisgau, the Flurkreuz whispers stories of faith, loss, and remembrance. This unassuming wayside cross, nestled amidst the bustling city, holds a history far richer than its simple appearance suggests. The Flurkreuz isn’t just a cross; it’s a testament to human resilience and devotion. Look closely at the Flurkreuz. Notice the inscription INRI at the top. These initials represent “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum,” Latin for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” The figure of Christ on the cross is unique. Its proportions are unusual, with noticeably short legs. These legs may have been added later, a theory supported by the wide loincloth that seems to conceal a joint. This damage likely dates back to the French Revolution. The loincloth and crown of thorns are gilded, adding a touch of elegance to the weathered stone. Beneath the figure of Christ, another inscription beckons passersby: “O all of you who pass by, look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow.” This poignant verse from the Book of Lamentations resonates with the themes of suffering and redemption. The same inscription can be found on twelve other stone crosses in the region, connecting the Flurkreuz to a broader network of spiritual landmarks. The cross stands on a sandstone pedestal, which bears the inscription “1732,” marking the year of its creation. A lamb carrying a flag, symbolizing the Lamb of God (Jesus Christ), is also depicted on the pedestal. The initials “HF L” and “AM L” represent the donors, Heinrich Friedrich Lang and his wife Anna Maria, members of a prominent butcher family. The Flurkreuz was crafted by Jakob Weber, a sculptor who worked in Herxheim. The cross has been carefully preserved. A restoration in 1988, involving 200 hours of work by local artist Aribert Frosch and the community, ensured its continued presence in Freiburg. The Flurkreuz in Freiburg stands as a silent witness to centuries of history, a reminder of the power of faith and the enduring human spirit.
