Seven hectares of history lie before you. This is Flugplatzheide in Augsburg. Flugplatzheide wasn’t always a protected landscape. Once it was a bustling airfield. Imagine the roar of Rumpler aircraft in the early 20th century. These planes took flight from this very ground. The Rumplerwerke a subsidiary of the Berlin Rumpler Flugzeugwerke GmbH established an airfield here. Their first Rumpler C 1 took off in 1917. This marked a significant moment in Augsburg’s aviation history. Flugplatzheide became a hub for civilian flights after World War I. Passengers and mail were transported between Augsburg Munich and other major cities. The airfield’s role shifted dramatically. It transformed into a military base used by the US Army. The Americans used Flugplatzheide for almost two decades. They stationed around 25 aircraft here. However even during this time. Germans were permitted to use the area for gliding and later motor flight. This was a unique coexistence of military and civilian aviation. The Flugplatzheide served a purpose beyond military operations. The unique soil conditions were unsuitable for farming. It instead supported a rich biodiversity. Rare plants and animals thrived. The extensive grazing transformed it into a unique habitat. The airfield was closed in 1968. Its legacy lives on. Today Flugplatzheide protects this precious ecosystem. It is a reminder of Augsburg’s rich past. It’s a testament to the successful collaboration between the city and environmental activists. It safeguards a unique part of Augsburg’s heritage.
