“Is that a plane?” a child’s voice excitedly asked, breaking the murmur of the group. It is, of course, no surprise to find a plane near Flughafen Augsburg. This regional airport, nestled a few kilometers northeast of bustling Augsburg, is a hub of activity, albeit a specific kind. Unlike its larger, international counterparts, Flughafen Augsburg caters primarily to business and general aviation. Its story, however, is intertwined with the growth and ambition of Augsburg, revealing a past filled with both grand visions and changing needs. Flughafen Augsburg opened its gates in 1968, a successor to a smaller airfield in Haunstetten. The old airfield had to make way for progress, as the new University of Augsburg claimed its spot.
