Gazing upon the Flora Sculpture, one might sense a quiet grace. This bronze figure, perched atop a granite base, holds a silent conversation with the bustling city of Malmö. The Flora Sculpture isn’t just a statue. It’s a whisper from the past, a tribute to nature’s delicate beauty, and a testament to artistic vision. Created in 1936 by Jonas Fröding, a relative of the renowned Swedish poet Gustaf Fröding, the Flora Sculpture originally graced the grounds of the first county building. Now, it resides a few hundred meters away in a space affectionately known as “Flora’s Garden” along Kungsgatan. Fröding’s artistry shines through in the sculpture’s graceful form. He masterfully blended lyrical idealism with the natural proportions of the human body. Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, gazes serenely over Kungsgatan’s flower gardens. Originally, she held a bluebell in her outstretched hand, a detail lost to time. Though the flower is gone, the faint impression of its stem remains, a subtle reminder of a vanished element. The Flora Sculpture also carries a local mystery. The identity of the Malmö resident who modeled for the sculpture remains unknown. Perhaps it was a woman named Flora, lending her name to both the artwork and the surrounding garden. The sculpture’s relocation from the Länsstyrelsen to its current home in the 1980s adds another layer to its story.
