“Did the trees just wave?” a child’s voice whispered, breaking the quiet of Fløngskoven. “Silly,” his older sister giggled. “Trees don’t wave.” But the boy insisted. “These trees do. They’re telling a story.” Fløngskoven, nestled near Roskilde, Denmark, is indeed a storyteller. This young woodland, only planted in 2014, whispers tales of growth and community. Fløngskoven stretches across 17 hectares, a mix of carefully planned forestry and natural wonder. Four hectares are dedicated to folkeskov, a type of community forest accessible to everyone. Within this vibrant ecosystem, hazel, walnut, cherry, apple, chestnut, wild pear, elder, and blackthorn flourish. Fløngskoven stands among the youngest forests in Høje-Taastrup Kommune. But its youth doesn’t diminish its charm. Rather, it adds an air of dynamic energy, a palpable sense of ongoing creation. The forest’s expansion plans reach towards Soderup in the north and westward. This reflects its growing importance as a haven for both people and wildlife. Fløngskoven’s lake offers a tranquil escape. There, you can find a large shelter complete with a fire pit and covered tables. Imagine sharing stories around a crackling fire, the scent of woodsmoke mingling with the fresh forest air. This gathering spot fosters a sense of community, echoing the spirit of the folkeskov. Fløngskoven also boasts a designated area for our canine companions. This thoughtfully designed hundeskov provides a place for dogs to run free. It too offers a shelter. This allows owners to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. In 2017, Fløngskoven celebrated Skovens Dag, or Forest Day. An artist carved a magnificent wooden sculpture of an owl, a silent guardian watching over the growing trees. The owl, a symbol of wisdom, reflects the deep connection between nature and the human spirit. Fløngskoven offers a unique opportunity to witness the birth and growth of a forest.
