Let’s dive into why this church matters. The FLM started way back with Norwegian missionaries in 1867. They were the first to bring Lutheran teachings to this island. It wasn’t until 1950 that the church officially became the FLM. This happened when 1800 local Lutheran groups joined together. Imagine that many congregations uniting.
Today the FLM is huge. It has about 4 million baptized members. That makes it one of the largest Lutheran churches globally. It is also the third-largest church in Madagascar. The FLM is growing fast. This is partly thanks to a local movement called Fifohazana. It has boosted the church since the early 1900s. Many of the church’s leaders are part of this movement.
The FLM does more than just hold services. It runs nine hospitals and thirteen dispensaries. They have a health program called SALFA. It focuses on community health. They work on things like child health family planning and stopping HIV/AIDS.
Members of the FLM have also gone out as missionaries. They’ve served in places like Cameroon Papua New Guinea and Thailand. They share their faith and help others far from home.
The Malagasy Lutheran Church is organized into synods. There are 25 of them. Each synod has a leader elected by local church members. Every four years over 300 representatives meet. They elect the church’s governing body. This includes positions like President Secretary General and Treasurer. The current Bishop is Rev Dr Denis Rakotozafy.
Fifohazana is a key part of the FLM. It is a revival movement focused on the Bible. It started with Dada Rainisoalambo in 1894. The movement trains people to become “mpiandry” or shepherds. These shepherds share their faith and help people. They work with both Christians and those who still follow traditional beliefs. Fifohazana has set up compounds called “toby”. These are places for church activities exorcism counseling and medical care.
The first Lutheran church in Madagascar was founded in Betafo in 1867. It was started by Norwegian missionaries John Engh and Niels Nilsen. Other early churches include Masinandraina Antsirabe Loharano and Soavina Ambohimasina.
When it started the FLM had about 18000 members. Now it has millions. It was the first church from a former “mission field” to join the Lutheran World Federation.
The Malagasy Lutheran Church is connected to other churches worldwide. It joined the World Council of Churches in 1966. It is also part of the Lutheran World Federation and other groups.
