The Malagasy Lutheran Church, or FLM, has deep roots. Its story began with the arrival of Norwegian missionaries in 1866. They were sent by the Norwegian Missionary Society. In 1871, a church was founded here in Antananarivo Ambatovinaky.

Imagine Antananarivo in those early days. Missionaries John Engh and Niels Nilsen arrived with a mission. They sought to spread the Lutheran faith. The church in Ambatovinaky became one of the first fruits of their labor. Other early churches included Betafo, Masinandraina, and Soavina Ambohimasina.

The FLM grew steadily. In 1950, it unified 1,800 Lutheran congregations. These congregations were scattered across central and southern Madagascar. This unification marked a pivotal moment. The church officially became the Malagasy Lutheran Church. Pastor Rakoto Andrianarijaona was the first Malagasy pastor. He was elected to lead this newly unified church.

Today, the FLM is a major force in Madagascar. It boasts almost 4 million baptized members. It is the third-largest church in Madagascar. The FLM is also one of the fastest-growing Lutheran churches worldwide.

One key to this growth is the Fifohazana movement. This indigenous revival movement emphasizes the Word of God. It began in 1894 with Dada Rainisoalambo. The Fifohazana movement trains laypersons. These laypersons are called mpiandry or shepherds. They minister to both Christians and non-Christians. They also reach out to those who still practice traditional Malagasy religions.

The FLM’s influence extends beyond spiritual matters. The church operates a significant health care program. This program includes nine hospitals and thirteen dispensaries. SALFA is a community-based primary health project. It focuses on child survival, family planning, and HIV/AIDS prevention.

The Malagasy Lutheran Church also has a global reach. Its members have served as missionaries in Cameroon, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand. This demonstrates their commitment to spreading their faith beyond Madagascar’s borders.

The FLM is organized into 25 synods. These include a synod in Europe. Each synod elects a president. A national gathering elects the governing body every four years. This body includes the President, Secretary General, and Treasurer. The current presiding Bishop is Rev. Dr. Denis Rakotozafy.

The FLM maintains relationships with other churches. It joined the World Council of Churches in 1966. It is also a member of the Lutheran World Federation. The church has also sought closer ties with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
