A fiery Saturday night in March 1925 forever altered the course of Flipper Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church. Imagine the scene flames engulfing the beloved Larkin Street sanctuary. But this wasn’t the end. This is the story of Flipper Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church a testament to faith resilience and community.

Flipper Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church began its journey on January 4 1920. Twenty-four souls including Reverend C D Thornton and Mr H B McIver marched from Atlanta’s “Bottoms” to establish their church. Initially on Larkin Street it later found a home on Fair Street. This humble beginning under the guidance of Bishop Joseph Simeon Flipper laid the foundation for a remarkable institution.

The church faced its first major setback that fiery night in 1925. The building was completely destroyed by fire. Undeterred the congregation found solace in the parsonage continuing their worship. They rebuilt demonstrating an unyielding spirit. The congregation’s faith and determination shone through as they repaired the damage and resumed services.

Under the leadership of Reverend J F Moses the church experienced rapid growth. Renovations became necessary to accommodate the expanding congregation. Reverend Moses also made significant strides in the church’s financial stability establishing a bank account and reducing its debt.

The 1930s brought about a period of transformation. A new pastor Reverend H M Parker organized several new groups including the Progressive Choir. Soon afterward Reverend T David Norris paid off the church’s debt and led the charge for a new building. The groundbreaking in 1940 marked a new chapter for Flipper Temple.

Subsequent pastors like Reverend William L Brown and Reverend L G Long continued the church’s growth and development. Reverend Brown oversaw the construction of the current church building a symbol of lasting faith and community spirit. Reverend Long was known as a powerful preacher whose ministry touched countless lives. Flipper Temple continued to thrive through changing times.

Numerous pastors shaped the church’s destiny. Each contributed to its growth spiritual richness and community outreach. Reverend Reuben T Bussey improved the church’s finances. Reverend Julius C Williams focused on education. Reverend Dr Thomas L Bess Sr emphasized academic achievement for young people. Reverend Dr C Edward Wells Sr modernized the church.

The legacy of Flipper Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church extends beyond its walls. It’s a story of perseverance faith and the enduring spirit of a community. From a humble start to a vibrant institution this church stands as a beacon of hope inspiration and unwavering faith.
