Ever wondered about a green oasis nestled in the heart of Malmö? That’s Flensburg. It is a neighborhood with a fascinating past and a promising future. Flensburg lies in the borough of Södra Innerstaden.

Flensburg covers a compact area of only 19 hectares. Back in 2008, it was home to 669 residents. By 2011, the population had grown to 788.

Historically, western Flensburg was part of the “donation lands”. These lands housed various public operations. There was a colony area. Also, there was a nursing home and a children’s hospital. This area south of the hospital area is west of Mobilia.

Today, Malmö city owns most of Flensburg. It accommodates preschools and special housing. There are spaces for employment activities and parasports. You will also find parking lots here. Medeon Science Park, Malmö University, and Region Skåne operate here too. Specifically, they run child and youth psychiatric services.

Flensburg is known for its “house-in-a-park” feel. It features mature greenery and old trees. The Flensburg Children’s Hospital stands as a culturally significant building. Vestiges of the Southern Summer City colony area remain. So does Borgmästaregården. They offer glimpses into the area’s green past.

Looking ahead, plans are underway to transform western Flensburg. The goal is to create a shared vision for the area’s future. This involves property owners, residents, and other stakeholders. New detailed plans for care buildings and preschools are in development. Consultations on these plans are scheduled for 2024.

Imagine Flensburg evolving. It is respecting its history. But it is also embracing modern needs. New facilities will blend seamlessly. They will incorporate the existing green spaces. The area will retain its unique character.

As you wander through Flensburg, notice the blend of old and new. The historic buildings tell stories of the past. The vibrant greenery provides a tranquil escape. This neighborhood has a rich history. It is evolving into a dynamic part of Malmö. Flensburg is not just a place on a map. It is a living, breathing community. It balances tradition with progress.
