Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the Fleher Brücke, proudly stretching its cables across the Rhine! Right here before you stands one of Düsseldorf’s most iconic landmarks. The Fleher Brücke isn’t just a bridge. It’s a feat of engineering. Completed in 1979, this cable-stayed marvel boasts the tallest bridge pylon in all of Germany, a towering 146.47 meters. Look closely at how the bridge connects Düsseldorf to Neuss. It’s slightly askew, isn’t it? That’s no accident. The designers purposefully angled the Fleher Brücke to protect the water catchment area of the old Flehe waterworks. This bridge was a game-changer. Before it was built, the older Südbrücke shouldered the burden of traffic between Düsseldorf and the areas west of the Rhine. The Fleher Brücke’s construction finally provided a direct link for the A46 motorway, easing congestion and opening up new routes. But the Fleher Brücke’s story isn’t all smooth sailing. In 2003, inspections revealed corrosion on the bridge’s cables. It was a massive undertaking, but over the next few years, they replaced nine of the cables entirely and implemented better rust protection.
