Can you hear the whispers of the past at Flatrock Nature Center? This tranquil oasis, nestled in the bustling suburbs of New York City, holds a secret history. Flatrock Nature Center wasn’t always a haven for chipmunks and owls. In the early 20th century, it was part of a sprawling 1,000-acre estate. This estate belonged to the Paine family, who played a significant role in the industrial and cultural development of Willsboro, New York. Flatrock Nature Center itself sits on land once known as Jones Point. Local farmer Hiram Jones sold this parcel, about 18 acres, to Augustus G. Paine Jr. for a mere $500. Jones, a colorful character, boasted he’d swindled a “city slicker” by selling him worthless rock. He clearly didn’t share Paine’s vision. Paine saw the potential of the land, a unique pavement barren formed by glacial action on Potsdam sandstone. This geological feature, covered in mosses, lichens, and stunted pitch pines, is globally rare. Paine began building Flatrock Camp around 1890. The camp, designed by Paine himself, became a summer retreat for family and friends. At its peak, it could accommodate over 30 guests, complete with servants and a seasonally resident cleric. The camp even boasted its own playhouse, “Friscote,” built for Paine’s daughter. The estate had extensive gardens, cultivated by Maude Potts Paine and later enhanced by Paine’s second wife, Francisca. A.G. Paine’s connection to the area extended beyond his estate. He managed the local pulp mill, which flourished under his leadership. He founded the local bank and built the Paine Memorial Free Library, both testaments to his commitment to Willsboro. The Paine family’s legacy continued, with the estate remaining in family ownership for over a century. In the late 1970s, the family donated a conservation easement to The Nature Conservancy. This ensured the preservation of this unique landscape, including Flatrock Nature Center. Today, as you walk the trails of Flatrock Nature Center, remember the echoes of its past. From industrialist’s estate to nature preserve, it stands as a testament to the visionaries who recognized its value and ensured its preservation. The chipmunks scurrying along “Chipmunk Way,” as some call it, are a testament to the enduring legacy of Flatrock Nature Center.
