The Flatbush Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s story began as a mission in 1969. Officially, it was organized as a church in the fall of 1972. Early members first met in a street-level commercial unit. As the congregation grew they sought larger spaces. They relocated to Zion Lutheran Church. In 1973, Pastor Lionel Arthur arranged for the congregation to meet at St. Mark’s Methodist Church.
A significant turning point arrived in 1982. The Flatbush Seventh-Day Adventist Church purchased the former Third Church of Christ Scientist. This building stands on East 21st Street near Albemarle Road. The first service was held there on July 31, 1982. The Greek Revival-style building was designed in 1927. Cherry and Matz of New York City were the architects. The auditorium can accommodate 1000 people.
Under Pastor Hope Ashmeade, the church facilities saw improvements. The sanctuary was refurbished to enhance its beauty. Elizabeth McIntosh, a nurse, proposed a special fundraising plan. She asked nurses in the congregation to donate $100 each. Other healthcare professionals were asked to give $50. Violet Dixon championed this proposal. Instead of the initial goal, the church was able to purchase a full-sized grand piano.
Pastor Ashmeade also spearheaded a major project. This was the restoration of the Hook & Hastings pipe organ. It had become practically non-functional. The Youth Auditorium was also refurbished. The Flatbush Seventh-Day Adventist Church paid off its mortgage in full in August 1990.
The Hook & Hastings organ is a significant feature. It was originally built in 1928. The organ was rebuilt in 1987 with several stops changed. Stopkeys refitted the console. The rebuilt organ was dedicated on December 12, 1987.
