Ever wonder how flamingos found their way to the desert? Here we are at the Flamingo Las Vegas. This resort stands as a testament to Las Vegas history. It is also a vibrant habitat for these beautiful birds.

The Flamingo’s story begins in 1945. Billy Wilkerson, founder of The Hollywood Reporter, bought the land. He dreamed of a glamorous resort. But he lacked the funds to complete his vision.

Enter Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. He was a notorious mobster. Siegel took over the project. Costs soared to 6 million dollars due to his mismanagement.

The Flamingo opened on December 26, 1946. It was not the first resort on the Strip. However, it was the first to boast an upscale design. The hotel section opened later on March 1, 1947.

Stories vary about how the Flamingo got its name. Some say Siegel named it after the flamingos at Florida’s Hialeah Park Race Track. Others claim it was after his girlfriend, Virginia Hill. She was nicknamed “The Flamingo” for her red hair and long legs.

Siegel’s reign was short-lived. He was murdered in June 1947. Ownership of the Flamingo changed hands many times over the years. Hilton Hotels Corporation bought it in 1972. It became the Flamingo Hilton.

The original three-story hotel was demolished in 1993. This made way for a new pool area and animal habitat.

The Wildlife Habitat opened in 1995. It became home to Chilean flamingos and other exotic birds. The habitat covers four acres. It holds 400000 gallons of freshwater in its ponds.

The Flamingo has a rich entertainment history. Wayne Newton began his headlining career here in 1963. Donny and Marie Osmond had an 11-year residency.

Today, the Flamingo Las Vegas has 3460 rooms. Renovations keep the resort modern. Yet it still retains its retro charm.

Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse pays homage to the resort’s past. It is named after Siegel and Meyer Lansky. It offers guests a taste of old Vegas glamour.

The Flamingo Las Vegas remains the oldest continuously operating resort on the Strip. It has evolved over the decades. It still offers a unique blend of history, entertainment, and natural beauty. The Flamingo continues to attract visitors from around the world. It is a true Las Vegas icon.
