Was this place always a church? Standing before the FJKM Ambatotokana, one might assume so. The current structure, a beautiful example of early Malagasy stonework, dates back to 1867. Yet the history of FJKM Ambatotokana goes back further, to a darker time. Before the elegant arches and sturdy bell tower graced this spot, it held a much grimmer structure: the prison of Rasalama.
Rasalama, now revered as the first Malagasy Christian martyr, was imprisoned here for her faith. Her story is one of unwavering devotion in the face of persecution. The exact location of her prison, now occupied by FJKM Ambatotokana, became a sacred site. In 1831, even before the present stone church was built, the first Christian service was held here. It was a simple affair, under a modest wooden structure built by missionaries David Jones and James Cameron.
The current FJKM Ambatotokana church, designed by architect James Sibree, was inaugurated in 1867 by King Rasoherina. This marked a turning point for Christianity in Madagascar. This church, the first to be built with stone on the island, stands as a testament to the resilience of faith and the enduring legacy of those who fought for religious freedom.
