It’s a giant Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver, but its barrel is twisted into a knot, pointing skyward. This powerful symbol was created by Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd. The Fjättrad i nuet Sculpture was born from tragedy. Reuterswärd designed it after the murder of his friend, John Lennon, in 1980. The knotted barrel transforms a weapon of violence into a plea for peace. The Fjättrad i nuet Sculpture isn’t unique to Malmö. Around 30 replicas exist worldwide, half of them in Sweden. The most famous stands at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Originally, the first one was intended for Strawberry Fields, Lennon’s memorial in Central Park. Reuterswärd feared theft, so he chose a different path, a path that led to the UN. The Fjättrad i nuet Sculpture here in Malmö embodies the Non-Violence Project’s mission. It silently speaks of peace, a reminder of the futility of violence and the power of understanding. It’s close to the central station, a constant presence in the city’s life.
