Gazing upon the intricate carvings of the Five Pagoda Temple, one might imagine ancient monks chanting within its walls. The Five Pagoda Temple, also known as Zhenjue Temple, stands as a testament to the fusion of architectural styles. Located north of Beijing Zoo in the Haidian District, it invites you to step back in time to 1473. That’s when this Indian-style temple was completed, a gift from a distant land. The temple’s actual name, Zhenjue Temple, meaning “Temple of the Great Righteous Awakening,” is etched at its entrance. Locals, however, prefer the more descriptive “Five Pagoda Temple,” inspired by the five majestic pagodas that crown its structure. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, the Five Pagoda Temple received renovations under Emperor Qianlong during the Qing Dynasty. Sadly, fires in 1860 and 1900 destroyed the surrounding wooden structures. Only the resilient marble pagodas and their base survived. The temple’s unique design blends Indian and Chinese influences. The five pagodas stand upon a square, six-storied foundation, also called a “diamond throne.” Each story of the foundation boasts intricate carvings, small Buddhist shrines, and even Sanskrit letters. The five pagodas themselves, one central and four at the corners, rise from this base. The central pagoda, slightly taller with thirteen stories, stands as the focal point. Delicate images of Buddha, bodhi trees, and various animals adorn the pagodas. Look closely, and you might even find a pair of Buddha’s footprints carved into the central pagoda’s base. Today, the Five Pagoda Temple serves not only as a historical landmark but also houses the Beijing Stone Carving Museum. Here, over 2,000 pieces of stone artwork are preserved. So, as you admire the Five Pagoda Temple, remember its journey through time. Reflect on the blend of cultures, the resilience of its structure, and the art it now protects within its walls.
