In 1925, a grand building arose at the unusual intersection of Walnut, 34th, and the diagonal of the former Woodland Avenue. This was Fisher Bennett Hall. It was originally called Bennett Hall. Its unique location dictated its unique design, with the main façade gracing the beveled corner. The building’s height varies, appearing as four to six stories depending on the viewpoint due to the sloping site. Fisher Bennett Hall was the first building at the University of Pennsylvania specifically designed for women. It originally housed Bennett College. Architects Stewardson & Page envisioned a space where women could pursue their academic dreams. They included classrooms, a library, a gymnasium, and even a student union. The building became a beloved landmark. In 2005, Fisher Bennett Hall underwent extensive renovations, modernizing its facilities while preserving its historic charm. It reopened in 2006, renamed to honor a generous benefactor. Today, Fisher Bennett Hall is a vibrant hub of learning. It houses the English Department, English Language Programs, the Music Department, and Cinema Studies, among others. The central tower dominates the façade. It boasts decorative buttresses and corner spires, standing proudly above the main entrance. Flanking the tower are impressive two-story windows, enhancing the building’s grandeur. Fisher Bennett Hall represents a significant step in the history of women’s education. It serves as a reminder of the progress made and the opportunities created for generations of women.
