Gazing at the Fish Harbor Channel Light 1, ever wonder about its emerald glow? This isn’t just any light. Fish Harbor Channel Light 1, also known as Angels Gate Light, is a sentinel of Los Angeles Harbor. It stands tall on the San Pedro Breakwater, a vital part of the bustling port since 1913. Fish Harbor Channel Light 1 has a unique history. It was initially envisioned as a simple wooden structure, much like the lighthouses at Oakland Harbor and Southampton Shoals. Instead, it became a unique steel-reinforced concrete tower, the only one of its kind. This robust design proved crucial. The lighthouse weathered a ferocious five-day storm just a few years after its construction. While the storm settled the concrete block beneath the tower, giving Fish Harbor Channel Light 1 a permanent list, the structure itself remained defiant. The lighthouse has even brushed with warships. One dark night, a ship collided with the breakwater, sending a keeper tumbling. The incident, involving a battleship, remained classified for years. During World War II, the lighthouse took on additional duties, housing a degaussing station and radio direction finding equipment. Through the years, Fish Harbor Channel Light 1 has seen its share of changes. The original foghorn, “Moaning Maggie,” was replaced by the less popular “Blatting Betty”. Its original white paint was accented with vertical black stripes to improve visibility in fog. In 1973, Fish Harbor Channel Light 1 transitioned into automation, ending the era of resident keepers. Even its light has changed. Initially a flashing white from a fourth-order Fresnel lens, it now emits a distinctive emerald green. Fish Harbor Channel Light 1 continues to guide ships into Los Angeles Harbor. Its unique design, its resilient history, and its emerald beam mark it as a true beacon of the Pacific.
