Who knew a fish could tell such a tale? Right here before you stands the Fischbrunnen a fountain unlike any other. Its story isn’t just about water and bronze. It’s a Munich saga spanning centuries.

The Fischbrunnen you see today isn’t the original. A fountain existed on this spot as far back as 1318. Its precise location is lost to time. Yet its legacy lives on. By 1343 a “citizen’s fountain” existed here. Later it was called the Marktbrunnen. This was a simple well drawing water from Munich’s shallow groundwater.

Then came progress. Munich’s first water pipeline brought fresh water to the city center. The fountain on Marienplatz was the first to benefit. Four brass tubes spouted water constantly.

A grander Fischbrunnen replaced this humble well. Konrad Knoll designed the neo-gothic predecessor between 1862 and 1865. It was unveiled on September 19 1866. Bronze sculptures depicted butchers pouring water. Musical children stood above them. A journeyman with a raised cup crowned the design. The fountain even received water from the Mangfall Valley starting July 29 1884. That’s why you see 1884 engraved in the basin.

War struck. Almost complete destruction in 1944. Josef Henselmann stepped in. Using salvaged pieces he recreated the fountain in 1954. Three butcher figures survived. Three musicians from Knoll’s original design now grace the Karlstor.

Henselmann’s fountain keeps the tradition alive. A Nagelfluh basin holds the central column. Otto Kallenbach a pupil of Henselmann crafted the bronze fish. The fish reminds us of the old fish market. Fishmongers once hung their catch in the fountain’s cool water. The three butchers continue to pour water into the basin a nod to the Metzgersprung.

Restoration followed in 1991 and 2011. A drinking fountain was added for Munich’s canine citizens. The joints were re-sealed and bronze figures carefully cleaned.

The Fischbrunnen isn’t just a pretty sight. It’s a living piece of Munich’s history. The Metzgersprung a tradition where butcher apprentices jumped into the fountain on Rosenmontag continues even today. Ash Wednesday brings the Wallet Washing a quirky ritual to ensure city finances prosper.

So gaze upon the Fischbrunnen. Feel the cool water. Let its bronze figures whisk you back in time. It’s more than just a fountain it’s a testament to Munich’s enduring spirit.
