Can you hear the echoes of faith? They resonate here at First Zion Belmont Baptist Church. This church isn’t just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the enduring power of faith. First Zion Belmont Baptist Church stands as a beacon of hope, a place where lives are changed through love, comfort, and peace. First Zion Belmont Baptist Church was founded in a turbulent era, in 1862, amidst the Civil War and the bonds of slavery. Nine courageous men dared to dream of a place where they could worship freely. Chance Mitchell, Jacob McKenzie, Ansley Smalls, Gabriel Jenkins, Jackie Riley, Prince Fuller, Adam Bruin, Jack Bush, and Sam Frazier, led by Rev. Abraham Merchison, established First African Baptist Church, which later became First Zion Belmont Baptist Church. The original structure, a two-story building, stood for almost a century, witnessing generations of faith. In 1959, under the leadership of Rev. A.O. Mitchell, a new sanctuary was built upon the foundation of the old. The church continued to thrive, becoming a cornerstone of the community. It opened the first Church Day Care Center in the area in 1966, demonstrating its commitment to serving others. Numerous ministries blossomed within its walls. The Usher Board, organized in 1930, the Ladies Auxiliary in 1974, which later evolved into the vibrant Women’s Ministry in 1998, all contribute to the rich tapestry of First Zion Belmont Baptist Church. The church also nurtured future spiritual leaders, ordaining several Sons of Zion into the ministry. Even during times of transition, First Zion Belmont Baptist Church persevered, relying on the strength and dedication of its members and lay ministers. The church continued its growth and outreach into the 21st century, remodeling its sanctuary in 2001 and establishing a Food Pantry in 2014. Today, under the guidance of Pastor Bennie L. Jenkins Jr., First Zion Belmont Baptist Church continues to embrace its mission: to be the voice and the hands that encourage people to change their lives through faith, love, hope, comfort, joy, and peace. As you stand before First Zion Belmont Baptist Church, remember the nine men who laid the foundation, the generations who worshipped within its walls, and the enduring spirit of faith that continues to resonate today.
