First United Church, originally known as First Baptist Church, was established in 1841. This makes it one of the oldest churches in Houston. The church has weathered numerous storms, both literal and figurative. It faced challenges such as yellow fever epidemics, the Civil War, and even the devastating Galveston Hurricane of 1900. Yet, First United Church persevered.
The hurricane completely destroyed the church’s magnificent brick building. The building had a tower that soared 145 feet above the ground. Undeterred, the congregation found a unique temporary home – a dance hall! This ironic turn of events highlights the congregation’s adaptability and unwavering spirit. They met in the dance hall until their new church was constructed in 1902.
