On a sunny afternoon in downtown Houston, a grand spectacle unfolds in front of First United Church. The church stands tall and proud, a beacon of faith and resilience. First United Church has borne witness to the city’s dramatic transformation from a small frontier town to a bustling metropolis. Its story is deeply intertwined with the history of Houston itself.

First United Church, originally known as First Baptist Church, was established in 1841. This makes it one of the oldest churches in Houston. The church has weathered numerous storms, both literal and figurative. It faced challenges such as yellow fever epidemics, the Civil War, and even the devastating Galveston Hurricane of 1900. Yet, First United Church persevered.

The hurricane completely destroyed the church’s magnificent brick building. The building had a tower that soared 145 feet above the ground. Undeterred, the congregation found a unique temporary home – a dance hall! This ironic turn of events highlights the congregation’s adaptability and unwavering spirit. They met in the dance hall until their new church was constructed in 1902.

The story of First United Church is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the enduring power of faith. The church has been a constant source of strength and solace for generations of Houstonians. It has adapted to the changing times while remaining true to its core values.
