“Free in Faith, Diverse in Thought, United in Caring, Committed to Action” – these words, etched onto the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans’ website, echo its spirit. The First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to New Orleans’ ever-evolving story. The church we see today wasn’t originally Unitarian Universalist. It was built in 1950 for the First Evangelical And Reformed Church. This congregation, primarily German-speaking, had called New Orleans home since 1825. Fires had tragically consumed their first two churches. Their third attempt, a beautiful edifice on Carondelet Street, stood from 1907 until this congregation decided to move once more. Merging with the Church of Christ led them to this very spot on South Claiborne Avenue. In 1992, another chapter unfolded. The congregation merged again, becoming the First Trinity Evangelical United Church of Christ. They relocated to Metairie, leaving behind a legacy in brick and mortar. It was then that the Unitarians, embracing the space’s history, made it their own. This passing of the torch speaks volumes about New Orleans’ spirit. Amidst the city’s vibrant tapestry, the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans stands as a symbol of unity and resilience. It reminds us that even within changing times, the pursuit of faith and community remains a constant.
