In 1914 a beacon of liberal religion ignited in Houston’s Museum District. This was the birth of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston. It quickly became a prominent center for progressive thought in the southern United States. For over a century this church has stood as a testament to its commitment to social justice and peace. This was in alignment with Dr King’s vision of a beloved community.
The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant community of individuals from diverse backgrounds. They share a common belief in love understanding and peace. Members come from various faith traditions ethnicities and spiritualities. They have different genders and sexual orientations. The church embraces this diversity encouraging members to think independently and ask challenging questions. The church teaches that one needn’t think alike to love alike.
This welcoming spirit is reflected in the church’s rich history. Its roots trace back centuries to liberal religious pioneers in England Poland and Transylvania. In North America Unitarian and Universalist traditions emerged among early Massachusetts settlers and even some of the Framers of the Constitution. These two groups united in 1961 forming the Unitarian Universalist Association.
Today the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston continues its legacy. It’s a place where people of all backgrounds can come together. They explore their spirituality and work towards a more just and peaceful world. They actively use their skills talents and experiences to positively impact the world. Rev Dr Colin Bossen the church’s Senior Minister has been instrumental in this. His work in social justice and religious scholarship has greatly influenced the church’s mission.
