First Union Baptist Church, however, has faced its share of trials. In 2012, the church faced a devastating financial crisis, declaring bankruptcy and staring down the barrel of foreclosure. This wasn’t just a building at stake, but a spiritual home, a community cornerstone. But like a phoenix from the ashes, First Union Baptist Church was given a second chance. The Legal Aid Society and Thorobird Companies, a local developer, joined forces. They crafted a remarkable solution, negotiating a settlement to save the church. The plan included developing affordable housing on the property, a vital need in the community. This innovative approach not only saved First Union Baptist Church but also addressed a critical community need. This partnership exemplifies the power of community collaboration. It demonstrated that even in the direst of circumstances, hope and resilience can prevail. Thanks to this intervention, First Union Baptist Church continues to thrive.
