Founded on fervent prayer, First Thessalonian Missionary Church has a history you won’t soon forget. First Thessalonian Missionary Church started as a small prayer band in June 1957. Rev. W.H. Waldon Jr. gathered a faithful few in his home on Joyland Place. This group included his wife, Ruther, along with Leon Cruse, Coatis Flannagan, and Eugene Crawford. By September of that same year, the group expanded and transitioned into a mission. They soon outgrew Waldon’s apartment and decided to formally organize as a church. In March 1958, First Thessalonian Baptist Church officially came into being under Rev. Waldon’s leadership. The church quickly found a new home at 928 West Fair Street by November 1958. This marked a significant step, solidifying their presence with a name, charter, pastor, members, and their first ordained deacon, Walter Harris. First Thessalonian Missionary Church thrived and eventually required a larger space. In October 1967, they relocated to their current location at 637 Joseph E. Boone Blvd. The church continued to flourish under three different pastors. Today, under the guidance of Rev. Leroy Wright, First Thessalonian Missionary Church remains a vibrant community. They focus on spiritual growth through active Bible study, Sunday school, a thriving youth department, and uplifting choir music. The church welcomes all visitors to experience its Christ-centered atmosphere and engage in worship, prayer, and the study of God’s word. Sunday services feature music of praise and inspirational messages. Visitors even receive a welcome package and a special gift. From humble beginnings as a prayer band, First Thessalonian Missionary Church stands as a testament to faith and community.
