What began as a small gathering of believers in 1874 has blossomed into the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles. The church now stands proudly at 760 South Westmoreland Avenue. It holds a significant place in the city’s religious history.
First Baptist Church of Los Angeles started with a vision. The vision was to share the gospel in a pioneering western city. Little did those first members know the extent of their ministry’s future. The church moved through different locations. It finally built its current home at Westmoreland Avenue and 8th Street.
Did you know that the current church building was designed in the Spanish Gothic style? Allison & Allison designed it in 1927. It is said that the design was inspired by the Ducal Palace in Mantua, Italy.
The First Baptist Church of Los Angeles is more than just a place of worship. It’s a hub of activity. Today, it houses three worshipping congregations. Several non-profit organizations also call it home. The church even serves as a venue for concerts. Weddings find a beautiful backdrop here. You might even recognize it from movie and television scenes.

The Pentecostal revival in Los Angeles is connected to this very church. It is said to have started here in 1905. This was thanks to Rev. Joseph Smale’s experience with Evan Roberts in Wales. Frank Bartleman, a key figure in the revival movement, also attended First Baptist Church.

Currently, the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles is led by Rev. Dr. Scott T. Arnold. He has served since January 2020. Pastor Scott is also an artist and author. He even shares his creations online.
