Imagine arriving at a church with 152 years of history. That is First Saint Mark Baptist Church. It stands as a beacon of faith established in Houston in 1869.
First Saint Mark Baptist Church began in Pilgrim’s Hall with eight dedicated members. Rev. P. Taylor led them. They purchased land on Maggie Street hoping the church would grow.
Over the years First St. Mark experienced growth and change. Twelve pastors shepherded the flock. They include Rev. Cushinberry Rev. B.J. Hall and Rev. H. Cannon. Each contributed to the church’s journey.
In March 1920 Rev. James H. Cook became pastor. He led for 40 years. During his time First St. Mark Baptist Church moved to its current site on Brackenridge.
Rev. W. L. Weathers became pastor in 1960. He oversaw the demolition of the old building. He replaced it with a new structure. The cornerstone was placed in the auditorium walls.
After Rev. Weathers Rev. R.J. Revels Jr. built the new fellowship hall. Rev. Willie Claiborne continued this success. He also built a fellowship hall.
Rev. Paul Speights then led. Rev. Murphy D. Simon Jr. followed. First St. Mark was televised for the first time under Pastor Simon.
In 2011 Pastor Charles Joseph Carter Jr. became the 12th pastor. He celebrated his 10th anniversary with a drive-thru parade. His vision is to equip the saints for ministry. He wants to evangelize the lost. He also aims to cultivate love.
During the pandemic Pastor Carter continued evangelism on Facebook. The media team helped carry the message. In September 2021 face-to-face worship returned.
First Saint Mark Baptist Church continues to thrive. Pastor Carter strengthens members through teaching. The church supports families in need. They update their facilities. They plan impactful ministry outreach. As Pastor Carter says “The Best is Yet to Come”.
First Saint Mark Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It reflects community and commitment. Its history is filled with dedicated leaders and members. Together they built a strong foundation. They press toward the mark for the prize.
