“Heroes” is not just a word. It’s a title earned through sacrifice. Here at the First Responders Memorial, we honor those heroes of Wayne County who gave their lives in service.
Established in 2013, the First Responders Memorial stands as a solemn tribute. It recognizes the bravery of police, fire, and EMS personnel. These brave men and women lost their lives in the line of duty. The First Responders Memorial is located at Hines Park. You’ll find it at the corner of Hines Drive and Haggerty Road in Plymouth Township.
Imagine the weight of those granite walls. Each of the six walls weighs 9,000 pounds. They bear the names of over 400 fallen first responders. The First Responders Memorial includes seat walls. Concrete walkways guide you through the space. A paver plaza provides a place for reflection. Site furnishings, plantings, parking and lighting complete the memorial.
Each year, more names are added to the First Responders Memorial. In May 2021, 14 names were added. Nine were from 2020-2021. Five were historical additions. The memorial wall now contains 431 names.
The dedication ceremonies are moving tributes. They include the presentation of colors. The National Anthem fills the air. A rifle volley honors the fallen. The Firefighters Bell Service echoes. Family members share stories of their loved ones. Wayne County officials speak of their dedication. All participate in a wreath ceremony.
