Hidden away in the bustling Museum District of Houston, First Presbyterian Houston stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. But its story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It begins in 1839, with a small group of believers gathering in the Senate Chamber of the Republic of Texas. This fledgling congregation, led by Reverend James Weston Miller, would become First Presbyterian Houston.

Their first dedicated home, completed in 1842, wasn’t just a place of worship. It hosted meetings for other denominations, embodying the spirit of early Houston. Imagine the scene as President Sam Houston himself addressed a joint session of Congress within those very walls in the summer of 1842.

Through the years, First Presbyterian Houston faced both growth and hardship. Fire destroyed their original church in 1862, leading to a new brick structure erected in 1867. This building, too, would fall victim to fire in 1932, prompting yet another rebuild. This time it was a grand stone edifice on Main at McKinney.

The congregation eventually found a permanent home in the Museum District in 1948. This move ushered in a new era with a state-of-the-art sanctuary, the first in Texas to boast air conditioning! This commitment to innovation while honoring their past reflects the spirit of First Presbyterian Houston. The church, a beacon of faith for almost two centuries, has borne witness to Houston’s growth from a fledgling republic to a sprawling metropolis.
