A small barn. That’s where it all began. The First Presbyterian Church of Farmington wasn’t always the impressive structure it is today. In 1954 a mission church started worshipping in Farmington High School. This was a humble beginning for what would become a cornerstone of the Farmington community. Just months later the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington was officially chartered. One hundred and forty-one people joined this new church. They were received into membership at the Masonic Temple in Detroit.

The church’s journey wasn’t confined to meeting halls. In 1955 they acquired five acres of land. This land included a residence. Knox House became the church’s offices. The small barn? It was transformed into a chapel. The first service in this makeshift chapel took place in October 1955. The congregation’s growth was phenomenal.

Growth led to change. A new church building was dedicated in 1961. A fellowship hall followed in 1972. The sanctuary was renovated in 1980 to improve comfort and energy efficiency. Throughout the 1990s stained glass windows were added. This enhanced the church’s beauty.

By the early 1990s the church needed more space. A new wing was built and dedicated in May 1994. The original Knox House was sold and moved. The barn the original chapel was removed. The First Presbyterian Church of Farmington had transformed yet again. It was now a larger more modern building.

Today the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington stands proudly. It’s a testament to the faith and dedication of its members. It’s a place of worship a place of community. It stands as a symbol of a remarkable journey from a small barn to a substantial church. A journey spanning decades shaped by growth adaptation and unwavering faith. The First Presbyterian Church of Farmington is more than just a building. It’s a living legacy. It’s a story written in stone wood and the hearts of the people who built it. It’s a story that continues to unfold.
