Did you know that the selection of an architect for First Presbyterian Church of Dearborn took over a year? Thirty-five architectural firms answered questionnaires. In 1960, the congregation chose Alden B. Dow. He was a recognized leader in church design.
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church – Dearborn. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith, community, and architectural vision.
Ground was broken in April 1963. Dow used the triangle to reflect the Trinity. A redwood cross stands above the entrance. It reaches 26 feet high. Inside, the sanctuary ceiling rises to 45 feet. It ascends in three planes. The congregation is grouped around the altar. The choirs are seated on the upper level. Side balconies unite the choir, nave, and chancel.
Dow also designed a great white oak cross. Ted Gwizdala hand-fashioned it. He was Dow’s master woodworker. Nave windows offer views of wooded areas. Plantings at the chancel and nave windows emphasize unity with nature.
The three-sided columns are distinctive. They feature a raised herringbone pattern. The chapel has a textured wall. It is made of angled concrete blocks. Triangular bits of colored glass pierce the blocks.
The dedication took place in January 1965. Dow wrote about his work. He said it was a true building. It complemented the site. It followed the congregation’s program. He felt these plans were unique. The church spoke with humility and enthusiasm.
