In 1678, a seed was planted. This seed, the First Parish in West Cambridge, would blossom into what we know today as the First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington. First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington has witnessed over three centuries of history unfold. Its story is one of resilience, transformation, and unwavering community. The first meeting house, a simple unheated stone structure built in 1734, speaks to the humble beginnings. Imagine the early congregants huddled together, their faith warming them against the New England chill. As the community grew, so did the need for a larger space. In 1804, a second meeting house was erected, its construction costs covered by the sale of 108 pews. This new building remained unheated for sixteen years, a testament to the congregation’s enduring spirit. Progress continued with a third meeting house in 1841, complete with an organ. Sadly, this structure was lost to a fire in 1856. Undeterred, the parish rebuilt in 1857, creating an awe-inspiring fourth meeting house with a 181-foot spire, the second highest in the state. It housed a 2000-pound bell and a town-funded clock, visible for miles around. Tragedy struck again in 1975 when another fire ravaged the church, destroying the iconic steeple. The damage was so extensive that the remnants had to be demolished. From the ashes rose a new vision. Architect Kenneth DeNisco was tasked with designing a replacement. His modernist design, a departure from the traditional, sparked controversy. Despite some dissent, the design was approved, and the new First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington was dedicated in 1981. The church we see today is a symbol of adaptation and renewal, a testament to the enduring spirit of the congregation. It stands as a beacon of community, a place where history and progress intertwine, inviting all to find solace and connection within its walls.
