Beneath the California sun stands First Oriental Mission Church. Its history whispers tales of faith resilience and cultural exchange. First Oriental Mission Church wasn’t always here. The original mission San Diego de Alcalá founded in 1769 by Father Junípero Serra faced challenges. A devastating fire in 1775 during a native uprising destroyed the first church. Father Luis Jayme a Franciscan priest lost his life in that tragic event. His remains now rest beneath the chancel floor of the present church. The mission’s rebuilding was difficult. Scarcity of water and challenging terrain hindered progress. Yet the community persevered. They established a manual training school. This school taught agriculture mechanical arts and livestock care. The neophytes not only became self-sufficient but also supported the military and civil government of California. First Oriental Mission Church also played a crucial role in California’s viticulture. Father Junípero Serra planted the first vineyards in 1769. Although these initial plantings did not survive. The mission’s wine production eventually flourished. First Oriental Mission Church showcases a remarkable blend of history faith and perseverance. It serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who built it. It’s a living legacy a place where the past and present intertwine.
