In August 1917, a small group with a big vision gathered together in Houston. This wasn’t just any gathering. This was the birth of the First Morning Star Baptist Church. It all began as a humble mission on the corner of West 28th and Detroit Avenue, a storefront sanctuary pulsating with hope. Twelve souls, led by the resolute Rev. J.R. Davis, marked their presence at that first service. Twelve souls who became the founding members, including individuals like Mr. John Thornton, Mrs. Hattie Foster, and Mr. Sam Davis. The name “Morning Star” was chosen by Mrs. Nancy Holt. She envisioned the church as a beacon of hope, a “bright star” drawing people towards its light. The First Morning Star Baptist Church’s journey wasn’t always easy. They moved from a purchased house on Mulberry Street to a rented space on Detroit Avenue. Tragedy struck in 1935 when a devastating bomb destroyed their Detroit Avenue sanctuary. The only survivors? A Bible and a Baptist Hymnal – symbols of resilience and faith. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, the First Morning Star Baptist Church persevered. Their spirit, much like their namesake, continued to shine brightly in the Houston sky.
