Tucked away in the bustling heart of Throggs Neck, stands the First Lutheran Church. It has a history as rich as the community it serves. First Lutheran Church wasn’t always the brick colonial-style building you see today. Its story begins in 1922. Pastor Oscar Mees of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church saw the need for a spiritual home in Throggs Neck. He purchased six lots near Barley Avenue. One lot included a barn. This humble barn became the first sanctuary for the fledgling congregation of First Lutheran Church of Throggs Neck. Reverend Merton Baseler became its first full-time minister in October 1922. The congregation thrived under his guidance. Soon, the little barn-turned-church was overflowing. The need for a larger space became clear. In 1930, the community broke ground on a new building. It was located on Eastern Boulevard, now known as Bruckner Boulevard, across from P.S. 14. This new sanctuary was dedicated in April 1931. However, progress sometimes comes at a cost. Just seven years later, the building was demolished to make way for the widening of Bruckner Boulevard. The congregation returned to its roots, once again worshipping in the old barn. This demonstrated their resilience and dedication. But the story doesn’t end there. The First Lutheran Church of Throggs Neck was destined for a permanent home. The current red brick colonial-style building on Baisley Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard was dedicated in 1942. It has served the community faithfully ever since. It has been a place of worship, fellowship, and outreach for over eighty years. First Lutheran Church of Throggs Neck has witnessed a century of change, growth, and unwavering faith. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its community. It is a symbol of the power of faith to overcome obstacles and build a lasting legacy.
