Founded in 1988 the First Free Will Baptist Church stands as a beacon of faith in Savannah. It serves the community. It welcomes all to experience its unique Baptist identity. Let’s delve into its story.

The First Free Will Baptist Church is located at 5210 Skidaway Rd. This location is a cornerstone for its congregation. The church actively serves Savannah. It also reaches out to Midtown and Savannah State-Glynwood.

In a world often divided the First Free Will Baptist Church embraces a powerful message. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey you are welcomed. You are accepted. You are loved. This ethos defines their approach to faith and community.

While the First Free Will Baptist Church of Savannah was founded in 1988 another Baptist church has a longer history. The First Baptist Church was established in 1800. It holds the distinction of being Savannah’s oldest surviving church building. It is located on Bull Street.

Originally the First Baptist Church worshipped in a meeting house on Franklin Square. In 1801 it received its charter from Governor Josiah Tattnall. Josiah Penfield a deacon left funds. These funds led to the construction of Penfield’s Mariner Church. It was known as “the Bethel on the Bay.” This stood on Bay Street for twelve years.

Elias Carter designed the current First Baptist Church building. Its cornerstone was laid in 1831. The congregation moved there two years later. In 1922 significant renovations occurred. These included extending the front. Limestone cladding was added. The cupola was removed.

During the Civil War First Baptist remained open. It stands as one of the few Southern churches to do so. The church’s organ installed in 1922 by Ernest M. Skinner is still admired today.

The First Free Will Baptist Church founded much later shares the same Baptist roots. It provides a unique expression of faith. Though its history is shorter it is impactful. It serves Savannah with devotion. Its welcoming message resonates deeply. It embraces people from all walks of life. It stands as a testament to faith. It also demonstrates community. It embodies love.
