Why does this church on Bull Street command such attention? First Baptist Church stands as a historic congregation in Savannah. Its story began in 1800.

Let’s explore the rich history of First Baptist Church. The congregation first met in a meeting house on Franklin Square. It received its charter in 1801 by Governor Josiah Tattnall.

Josiah Penfield was a key figure. He was a deacon who provided for the church in his will. After his death in 1828, proceeds funded a brick church. It was named Penfield’s Mariner Church. People knew it as “the Bethel on the Bay”. This church stood on Bay Street for twelve years.

The current building has stood since 1833. Architect Elias Carter designed it. The cornerstone was laid on February 2 1831.

Six years later, the congregation expanded the sanctuary. In 1922, the church installed an Ernest M Skinner organ. This added to the church’s beauty.

By 1947, the church adopted the name “First” Baptist Church. This distinguished it from other Baptist churches. It remained open throughout the American Civil War.

Local architect Henrik Wallin oversaw significant alterations in 1922. These included extending the front and cladding the building in limestone. The cupola was also removed.

Notable pastors have led First Baptist Church. These include W L Pickard and Norman Cox. Pickard later became president of Mercer University. Cox served as executive secretary of the Historical Commission.

First Baptist Church’s commitment extends beyond its walls. It embraces inclusiveness, ecumenism, missions and social justice. The church values holy scripture. It believes in the priesthood of all believers. It respects the autonomy of the local church. It supports the servant leadership of both men and women.

First Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It educates people in Christian discipleship. It nurtures personal and spiritual growth. The church ministers to those in need. It welcomes all who seek truth and love.

First Baptist Church stands as Savannah’s oldest standing house of worship. It represents a legacy of faith and service. Its history echoes through the city. It is a testament to the enduring power of community.
