It was called the glory barn so that the poor would feel welcome. That’s how the story of First Church of the Nazarene in Los Angeles began. Are you ready to delve into its rich past?
Los Angeles First Church of the Nazarene’s history began 127 years ago. It dates back to 1895. This was the start of the Church of the Nazarene denomination. Dr. Phineas Bresee and Dr. J.P. Widney wanted to establish a church. It would emphasize the gospel’s holiness. This holiness would be evident in acts of love. Their focus was especially on the poor of Los Angeles.
The church’s initial locations were in downtown LA. One notable spot was the Glory Barn. It stood at 526 S. Los Angeles Street from 1896 to 1903. Later, the church moved to 6th and Wall. It then relocated to 25th and Magnolia. In 1953, First Church of the Nazarene found its home at 3rd and Vermont.
In 1995, the church celebrated its centennial. The celebration took place at the Shrine Auditorium. About 5000 people were expected to attend.
The First Church of the Nazarene has always ministered to the poor. It continues to serve the disenfranchised. The church’s four multi-language congregations reflect this commitment. The congregations serve the English, Spanish, Filipino and Korean speaking communities.
Rev. Ron Benefiel led the church during its centennial. He noted the Mid-Wilshire area as a landing strip for Los Angeles. He witnessed hope rekindled and lives lost to street violence.
Today, the First Church of the Nazarene stands as a stately colonial-style building. It was built in 1950. The location is 3401 W. 3rd St near Vermont Avenue. This is near neighborhoods affected by the 1992 Los Angeles riots. It is also three miles from the original Nazarene congregation site.
The Bresee Institute is a vital part of the church. It is named after the founder. The institute is a leading force. It trains men and women for urban ministries.
As the First Church of the Nazarene grew, it started three other congregations. These served the Spanish, Korean, and Filipino communities. It also established the Bresee Foundation. This is a non-profit. It addresses the social needs of the community.
Dr. Phineas F. Bresee’s vision still guides the church. He desired a place in the city’s heart. This place would be a center of Holy Fire. The gospel could be preached to the poor there.
The First Church of the Nazarene continues to offer weekly worship services. Sunday school classes and Bible studies are also available. The church remains a beacon of love and hope in Los Angeles. It embraces people from all backgrounds.
