The First Church of God, right here in front of you, is a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of its believers. It has been a beacon of hope for the community since its humble beginnings in the early 20th century. Imagine, a Black woman evangelist, serving Mrs. Ball, a prominent lawyer’s wife, who became a devout Christian herself. Mrs. Ball bought a tent and started Sunday School, a small spark that would ignite a flame of faith in Houston. The church moved from a drug store location to a Baptist Church building, and then to a small building in the Heights. The church’s vision expanded to create a Bible Institute and finally landed right here in 1975, where it continues to be a source of spiritual nourishment for countless individuals, creating a tapestry of diverse community life.
