From humble prayer meetings in a Brooklyn home to a vibrant community center the story of First Church of God is one of remarkable growth and unwavering faith.

First Church of God stands as a testament to the enduring power of prayer and community. Its origins trace back to 1921. Frank and Polly Clemmons hosted prayer meetings in their Bergen Street home. These meetings flourished attracting many seeking spiritual guidance.

The burgeoning congregation soon outgrew the Clemmons’ home. They rented a space on Rochester and Dean Streets. They adopted the name Brooklyn #1. The church became a mission center supporting Black migrants from the South. Frank and Polly Clemmons understood their struggles. They had recently migrated from North Carolina themselves.

Frank Clemmons became a renowned preacher. He forged a connection with Charles Mason. Mason was a leader in the Azusa Street Revival. A pivotal event in Pentecostalism’s history. Frank Clemmons helped reconnect Mason and William J. Seymour. Seymour was the leader of the Azusa Street Revival. They had previously lost contact.

In 1939 Brooklyn #1 purchased a bus garage. They transformed it into a beautiful church. They renamed it First Church of God in Christ of Brooklyn NY Inc. The church continued expanding. It served the community providing clothing food and financial aid.

First Church of God played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement. Leaders used the church to inform the Black community. They recruited demonstrators for campaigns advocating civil rights and economic justice.

Leadership transitioned through generations of the Clemmons family. Elder Frank Clemmons became a Bishop. His son Ithiel co-pastored the church. Then his brother Rev Dr Joseph Clemmons Sr took over. In 2019 Rev Dr Joseph Clemmons II became pastor. He continues the church’s mission to serve the community with love.

From its beginnings in a home to its current role as a beacon of hope First Church of God demonstrates unwavering commitment. This commitment is to serving its community and upholding social justice. It embodies the spirit of its founders. It continues to demonstrate unconditional love. A testament to faith in action a legacy of service a story of growth and enduring community.
