Imagine stepping back in time to 1912. First Church of Christ, Scientist stands before you. This Los Angeles landmark has a rich and varied history.

First Church of Christ, Scientist is located at 1366 South Alvarado Street in Pico-Union. The building itself is a work of art. Elmer Grey designed it. He blended Beaux Arts, Italianate, and Spanish Romanesque Revival styles.

Did you know this church is part of the Alvarado Terrace Historic District? It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 1984. Even earlier, in July 1971, it became a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

But the story of First Church of Christ, Scientist takes some interesting turns. In 1972, the church was sold. For a while, it served as a synagogue.

Then, it became the Los Angeles branch of the Peoples Temple. This was the church led by the infamous Reverend Jim Jones. First Church of Christ, Scientist is no longer listed in the Christian Science Journal.

Today, the building is home to Iglesia Adventista Central. It is a Spanish-speaking Seventh-day Adventist church.

First Church of Christ, Scientist has seen many changes. It began as a Christian Science church. It then was a synagogue. Later it was part of the Peoples Temple. Now, it serves a new congregation. This building continues to be a place of worship and community.
