“A church at the gates of hell.” Those words, spoken by the Lord to John Baptist Thomas, echo through the history of First Pentecostal Church of New Orleans. Founded in 1940 by Pastor Thomas, this vibrant church stands as a beacon of faith and community in the heart of the city. Pastor Thomas, a man of deep faith and artistic talent, understood the significance of establishing a church in a city grappling with spiritual needs. He believed that the First Pentecostal Church of New Orleans would be a source of revival and hope. The current facilities, built in 1954 by the devoted members of the church, stand as a testament to their dedication. They are known as “The church with a heart in the heart of New Orleans.” Through the decades, the church continued to thrive under the leadership of Pastor John Raymond Cupit. He served for 49 years, expanding the church’s influence both locally and globally. Pastor Cupit’s passion for missions and his unwavering dedication to spreading the gospel led to the establishment of numerous churches throughout the greater New Orleans area. The First Pentecostal Church remains active in missions, outreach, and community service, continuing the legacy of faith and compassion established by its founders.
