How easily we forget that faith can have consequences. Here at the First Century Gospel Church, we are reminded of a somber chapter. First Century Gospel Church, established in 1925, carries a history marked by both faith and controversy. This church, an offshoot of Faith Tabernacle Congregation, has adhered to the belief in prayer over modern medicine. Tragically, this belief has been linked to the deaths of over two dozen children from both congregations since 1971. One heartbreaking case involved a couple from First Century Gospel Church, the Schaibles, who lost two young sons to preventable illnesses. They believed in the power of prayer over medical intervention. These cases sparked national debate about religious freedom and child welfare, urging a closer look at Pennsylvania’s religious exemptions to child abuse and neglect laws. The legacy of First Century Gospel Church serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of faith and the responsibility we have to protect the vulnerable.
