Wasn’t 1859 a remarkable year? That’s when the First Baptist Church of West Tampa officially began. Imagine Tampa then a small town of only 500 to 600 souls. Sixteen charter members laid the foundation for this vibrant congregation. We stand before a testament to faith perseverance and growth. The First Baptist Church of West Tampa has witnessed incredible changes since its humble beginnings. It wasn’t always here on Kennedy Boulevard. Initially it found its home downtown. Then as Tampa expanded westward the church moved to Hyde Park. It was a period of significant growth prompting the construction of the beautiful Classical Revival style sanctuary we see today. Dedicated in 1924 this building represents a significant architectural achievement. It’s not just the sanctuary though. The First Baptist Church of West Tampa has expanded. The Culbreath Chapel the Tampa Baptist Manor and the Worship Center all stand as additions to this ever-evolving campus. Over the years twenty-one pastors countless interim ministers and many dedicated staff members have guided this flock. Their collective efforts have shaped the church’s character its community outreach and its enduring legacy. This church isn’t just about Sunday services. The First Baptist Church of West Tampa offers a multitude of programs. There are youth programs mission groups women’s ministries and choirs. A busy schedule also includes Bible studies weekday luncheons and even a Harvest Festival as a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Through the years the church has extended its reach far beyond its walls. It played a vital role in establishing eight new churches including Haitian Korean and inner-city missions. Its commitment to global outreach is evident through mission trips to places such as Puerto Rico Haiti Taiwan and Chile. Today the First Baptist Church of West Tampa is a vital part of its community.
