The First Baptist Church of San Diego held its first service on October 3, 1869. Horton also gifted the church its first bell. This bell was the first church bell in New San Diego. It was dedicated on October 31, 1869. Today, that bell still rings on special occasions. It is located in the rafters of the current building.
Reverend B. S. McLafferty led the congregation. He arrived on December 18, 1869. The church grew quickly. In 1888, a new building was constructed. It was at the corner of 10th and E.
The First Baptist Church of San Diego continues to evolve. By 1969, the church celebrated its 100th anniversary. It then occupied a jet-age auditorium. This space featured curving balconies. Since 2000, the congregation has worshipped in a unique sanctuary. It features wood panels and rough stone. Earth-toned upholstery adds warmth.
