The First Baptist Church of San Diego has a rich history. It began with a small group of people. They saw a need for a Baptist Church in New San Diego. Alonzo Horton recognized this need. He challenged Protestant denominations to build. He was the city’s founder.
The First Baptist congregation was organized on June 5, 1869. Rev. C. F. Weston led the way. They gathered in a small room in downtown San Diego. The first church building opened on October 3, 1869. It was on Seventh Street near F. Alonzo Horton donated the lot.
Horton also gave the church a bell. It was the first church bell in new San Diego. Today, the Horton Prize Bell sits in the rafters. It is in the current building in University City. They still ring it on special occasions. The Horton Prize Bell was dedicated on October 31st 1869. Rev. B. S. McLafferty arrived in December 18, 1869. He was called to lead the congregation.
As the church grew, they built a new building. It was in 1888 on the corner of 10th and E. The First Baptist Church of San Diego continues to follow Jesus. They teach from the Bible. They worship God. He is the Creator and Ruler of the universe.
Through Christ, people are healed. They are renewed and redeemed. They are forgiven and transformed. They are loved. Sharing this faith is their passion. They invite everyone to join their fellowship. Together they develop into faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
