First Baptist Church of Crown Heights

In 1953, a small group of faithful individuals ignited a spark that would illuminate Crown Heights. They founded the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights. This church wasn’t built of bricks and mortar alone. It was built on the dreams and aspirations of a community. Initially known as the First Baptist Mission of Williamsburg, the church held its first prayer service in the home of Sister Ethel Brown. Led by the soon-to-be Reverend Clarence Norman Sr., the congregation quickly grew. The New Hope Baptist Association officially recognized them as the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg in April 1953. The First Baptist Church of Crown Heights wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a beacon of hope. In 1962, they acquired a building on Monroe Street. Tragedy struck just before Christmas that year when a fire ravaged the new building. Undeterred, the congregation continued their worship in the remaining sections. Their resilience paid off. In 1967, the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg found its permanent home at 450 Eastern Parkway. With this move, they adopted their current name, First Baptist Church of Crown Heights. The church has always been deeply intertwined with the community. It has championed job training and housing development. It has offered support to the homeless and elderly. Under Reverend Norman Sr.’s leadership, many individuals answered the call to ministry. Reverends Karim Camara, Beaulah Smith, Christine Caton, Ava Jolley, and Iana Ryan were among those ordained. The church launched numerous ministries, transforming the community and touching countless lives. Reverend Norman Sr. led the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights for an incredible 62 years. In 2011, he appointed Reverend Daryl G. Bloodsaw as assistant pastor, preparing the church for the future. After Reverend Norman Sr.’s passing in 2015, Reverend Bloodsaw became pastor. He continued to guide the church until 2019. In 2020, Reverend Rashad Raymond Moore became the third pastor of the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights. He led the church through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He established a strong online presence, keeping the community connected and engaged. Even amidst loss and transition, the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights remains a vibrant testament to the power of faith. The church celebrated its 69th anniversary in 2022. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders and the unwavering dedication of its community.
