Did you know that the First Baptist Church of Chula Vista is part of a larger story? A story that began long before this specific church was built. Let’s explore the roots of this community.

The First Baptist Church of Chula Vista is connected to the First Baptist Church of San Diego. It all began with a small group of people in San Diego. They recognized the need for a Baptist church in the new San Diego.

Alonzo Horton the city’s founder encouraged Christian congregations to build. He understood their importance in the growing community. The First Baptist congregation was organized by Rev C. F. Weston on June 5 1869. It started in a small room in what is now downtown San Diego.

The first church building was started in August. It opened for worship on October 3 1869. This building was on Seventh Street near F. Alonzo Horton donated the lot to the church. Horton also gave the new congregation a church bell. It was the first church bell ever used in new San Diego.

The Horton Prize Bell was dedicated on October 31 1869. Rev B. S. McLafferty was called to lead the congregation. He arrived on December 18 1869. As the church grew a new building was needed. It was built in 1888 on the corner of 10th and E.

The story of First Baptist Church reflects core beliefs. They are based on the Bible and the gospel of Jesus Christ. These beliefs preserve unity and protect against false doctrine. The church believes the Bible is the Word of God. It is inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme authority for faith and practice.

The church believes in one true God. He exists eternally in three persons. These are the Father Son and Holy Spirit. Each possesses all attributes of deity. God is all-powerful all-knowing and everywhere present.

God the Father authored the plan of salvation. He sent his Son Jesus to be the Savior. Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man. He is the Creator Sustainer and Savior. Salvation is found in Him alone.

The Holy Spirit reveals and glorifies Jesus Christ. He empowers believers to live godly lives. The church believes humanity was created in God’s image. All human life is sacred. Salvation is a gift found only in Jesus Christ. The church is the body of Christ. It embraces the mission to share the Gospel.

Baptism is an important act of obedience. It symbolizes faith in Jesus. The Lord’s Supper memorializes Jesus’ death and anticipates His return. The First Baptist Church of Chula Vista continues this legacy. It carries on the mission of faith community and service.
