How about this? The story of First Baptist Church of Alpine begins not just with bricks and mortar. It begins with faith and a vision.

First Baptist Church of Alpine stands as a beacon. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. This community sought spiritual grounding in a developing land.

Let’s step back to the late 19th century. The seeds of First Baptist Church of Alpine were sown in 1883. Rev. George W. Baines, II preached here. He preached the first sermon at the Southern Pacific station. He was on his way to a missionary assignment in El Paso.

In April 1893, the First Baptist Church of Alpine was officially organized. It began with nine charter members. Eight were women. One was Julius C. Bird, a former Texas Ranger turned rancher. Rev. D. B. Rose became the first pastor. He served from 1894 to 1896.

For several years, the congregation met in various locations. In 1895, they built their own church. It was a small adobe structure. This structure was located on the same site as the present-day church.

Membership grew. In 1914, Rev. James T. Tartt arrived. He inspired the congregation. Under his leadership, funds were raised. The present church was built in 1916. Sadly, Rev. Tartt died in December 1916. This was from complications following surgery in Boston. His memorial was the first funeral in the new sanctuary.

The sanctuary featured a high domed ceiling. Magnificent stained-glass windows adorned the space. One window honors Rev. Tartt’s memory. Others honor early pioneer families. These families promoted religion in the untamed frontier.

The church was dedicated on June 13, 1926. This was after the debt was paid. Rev. L. E. Millican led the dedication service. Millican was a colorful preacher of the old west. He had led the dedication of the adobe church in 1895.

Today, First Baptist Church of Alpine continues its mission. It offers Sunday School at 9:30 AM. Morning Worship is at 11:00 AM. Bible Study is at 6:00 PM.
